In 2001 the Thomas Telford School, (through their subsidiary company dealing in remote access curriculum products, Thomas Telford Online), combined with the original sponsors to the Thomas Telford School, Tarmac plc, to become co-sponsors for the construction of one of the Government's new City Academies. The Mercers' Livery Company, original sponsors with Tarmac of the Thomas Telford School, were also very much involved. As the original architects for the Thomas Telford School BH&M were invited to take part in a limited design competition for the new School, which they won, being appointed in August 2001 in order to arrange a fast track construction programme for the completion of the Academy for occupation in the autumn of 2003. Within seven months the school existing on the site, T P Riley School, had been moved to temporary accommodation, the original school demolished and a new 16 month construction programme for the Academy started with Bowmer & Kirkland as Main Contractors. This Academy will be at secondary education level from 11+ to 17+ with a specialism in communications and information technology. The project opened on schedule as planned in 2003. |
